Sampler (Scarlet Letter). 1996. Hand embroidery on linen. 26.5 x 12 in. (66 x 30.8 cm)

SHE HATH GOOD SKILL AT HER NEEDLE . . .

This rag of scarlet cloth
assumed the shape of a
letter. It was the capital
letter A. . . . Each limb proved
to be precisely three inches
and a quarter in length.

The SCARLET LETTER, so
fantastically embroidered
and illuminated upon her
bosom, had the effect of a
spell, taking her out of the
ordinary relations with
humanity and enclosing her
in a sphere by herself.
